Wellfleet is about as far east, out into the Atlantic , as you can get in Massachusetts.  Continuing farther down, Cape Cod begins to swing back West towards the mainland.

Why stay in Wellfleet?

The vacationer who chooses Wellfleet does so knowing that a extra effort is necessary to reach this remote part of Cape Cod.  The fact that the majority of summer visitors frequent the mid-Cape areas of Hyannis and West Yarmouth, with its malls and crowds and traffic, is desirable to the Wellfleet visitor.  He knows that the Cape Cod National Seashore controls and severely limits development along the entire Cape Cod coastline facing the Atlantic Ocean.  Here, it is still possible to find a deserted stretch of beach even in the height of summer.
The Great Beach, running from Chatham to Provincetown, faces the Atlantic and is truly the best beach on the Cape. It inspired President Kennedy to form the Cape Cod National Seashore Project here on the Lower Cape and not in the Mid-Cape area where he had his own summer home. It is the only place to go if you are a lover of waves. Standing on the shore, beneath towering dune cliffs, one gets a special feeling watching the sun rise out of the ocean, knowing that beyond the horizon lies Portugal.

The North Atlantic is known for its violent storms and these produce some of the most majestic breakers here on the Outer Cape. Surfboarders of all ages are seen trying to harness that power year 'round here.

Beaches can be found on the Atlantic Ocean to the east, Cape Cod Bay on our western shores, and at the numerous crystal clear fresh water kettle ponds located between the two. These ponds were formed by huge chunks of ice left by our last passing glacier.
